Catholic Mass Media Awards 2011: ABS-CBN News and Public Affairs Programs bag Hall of Fame Awards

ABS-CBN Corporation swept major awards at the 33rd Catholic Mass Media Awards, reaping a total of 31 awards covering 13 for TV, seven for radio, four for music, one for movie, two for advertising and four ‘Hall of Fame’ awards. GMA Network, Inc. bagged only 13 awards

Two TV shows and two radio programs were elevated to the CMMA Hall of Fame namely “TV Patrol” for Best News TV Program, “Rated K” for Best Magazine TV Program, “Radyo Patrol Balita Alas-Siyete” for Best News Radio Program and “Maalaala Mo Kaya sa DZMM” for Best Radio Drama categories. The four shows won the unprecedented distinction of being CMMA Hall of Fame Awardees, being winners of their respective categories for three years.

Best News TV Program - TV Patrol
Best Magazine TV Program - Rated K
Best Radio Drama - Maalaala Mo Kaya sa DZMM
Best News Radio Program - TV Patrol sa DZMM

ABS-CBN bagged five major awards and four special citations in TV categories including Best Children and Youth Program for “Wansapanataym,” Best Drama Series/Program for “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” Best Station ID for “Ngayong Pasko, Magniningning ang Pilipino,” Best TV Special for “Cheche Lazaro Presents,” and Best Special Event Coverage for “TV Patrol.” Studio 23’s “US girls,” on the other hand, won Best Entertainment Program.

Meanwhile, special citations were given to “Patrol ng Pilipino” for Best News Magazine, “Liwanag sa Dilim” for Best TV Special and “Good Vibes” for Best Children and Youth Program.

Also making it in the CMMA winners’ list was ABS-CBN Regional Network Group (RNG) with special citations for TV categories including ABS-CBN TV3 Baguio’s “MagTV Na Atin’ To!” for Best Adult Educational/Cultural Program, ABS-CBN TV 4 Davao’s “MagTV Na Sadya Ta!” for Best Entertainment Program, and ABS CBN Iloilo’s “TV Patrol Iloilo Una sa Balita” for Best News Program.

GMA Channel 7 and GMA News TV (GNTV) were vested with honors for “using the mass media to promote Christian values in an outstanding way.” Leading the pack of GMA winners is the station’s flagship newscast, 24 Oras. The primetime newscast anchored by Mike Enriquez and Mel Tiangco won as this year’s Best News Program. Early morning public affairs show Unang Hirit was awarded as Television’s Best Public Service Program; while GNTV’s flagship newscast State of the Nation with Jessica Soho was awarded as Best News Magazine Program. Sandra Aguinaldo’s “Pasan Pasan,” which aired over the longest-running documentary program I-witness, won as Best Educational Program, while television’s pioneering environmental and wildlife show Born To Be Wild won a Special Citation for Best Adult Educational Program. The Michael V.-starrer Pepito Manaloto, the country’s first-ever reality sitcom, won as Best Comedy Program; the Sunday primetime talk show Mel and Joey, which bid farewell in July 2011, won as Best Talk Show; while the Sunday variety show Party Pilipinas won as Best Entertainment Program. The Saturday morning children’s show Tropang Potchi won a Special Citation for Best Children and Youth Program.

ABS-CBN’s radio outfit, DZMM Radyo Patrol Sais Trenta, meanwhile, conquered the CMMA radio categories as it achieved two Hall of Fame awards, three major awards, two special citations and one major award under the TV category for DZMM TeleRadyo.

DZMM also clinched top honors for its ‘infotainment’ shows including Best Counseling Program for “Dr. Love Radio Show,” Best News Commentary for “Tambalang Failon at Webb,” and Best Radio News Program for “Radyo Patrol Balita Alas-Dose.” Meanwhile, special citations were given to “Usapang Kapatid” for Best Counseling Program, “Dr. Love Music” as Best Entertainment Program, and “SikaPinoy” for Best Business News or Business Feature. DZMM TeleRadyo was a winner under the TV category with Best Special Event Coverage for “DZMM Halalan 2010: Ang Bayan Naman.”

ABS-CBN’s FM station, Tambayan 101.9 won Best Radio Drama for “Dear Jasmin,” the only FM show that competed against entries from AM programs .

Meanwhile, GMA's Super Radyo DZBB 594 khz bagged four awards. “Ikaw Na Ba? The Presidential Interview” hosted by veteran radio anchor Mike Enriquez, a special radio program produced during the height of the 2010 election campaign, won as Best Educational Program for the Radio category. DZBB’s Aksyon Oro Mismo hosted by Gani Oro won as Radio’s Best Public Service Program. DZBB programs Bangon Na, Bayan, anchored by Joel Reyes Zobel; and Super Balita Sa Tanghali, Nationwide!, anchored by Melo del Prado and Gani Oro won Special Citations for Best News Commentary and Best News Program in the Radio category, respectively.

Star Cinema and Star Records also made it to the formidable CMMA roster of winners. Star Cinema’s “Sa ‘Yo Lamang” won Students’ Choice Award for Best Picture while Star Records clinched trophies including Best Inspirational Album for “Inspirations,” Best Music Video for “Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo,” Best Inspirational Song for “Sayo Lamang” by Jamie Rivera with The Hail Mary the Queen Children’s Choir, and Best Secular Song for ”Patuloy ang Pangarap” by Angeline Quinto. ABS-CBN’s Creative Communications Management meanwhile won in the advertising categories with two Best TV ad awards for “Ang Laban ng Buhay” and “Sobre.”

Organized in 1978 by the late His Eminence Archbisiop Jaime Cardinal Sin, the annual CMMA pays tribute to the mass media profession particularly to those communicators and media outfits who outstandingly promote Christian values through key media platforms namely TV, radio, print, advertising, press, and film.
