Last year, Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington topped MAINDIE FILMS 2011 followed by Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank, and The Adventures of Pureza: Queen of the Riles.
This year, a film produced by a debuting indie film outfit tops 2012 Maindie Films. The indie film production outfit, Skylight Films Productions, debut this year with its first movie My Cactus Heart starring Maja Salvador, Xian Lim, and Matteo Guidicelli. The film grossed P23M in 3 weeks of showing in selected cinemas nationwide.
The film production's second movie Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang did well in the box office earning a total of P51.4M in 4 weeks of showing. Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang is a psychological thriller film starring Erich Gonzales and Derek Ramsay. The film was co-produced by Reality Entertainment and Strawdogs Studio, and directed by Richard Somes. It is 2012's number 1 top grossing indie film.
Skylight Films 3rd movie is another psychological thriller film entitled Amorosa: The Revenege. Starring Angel Aquino, Enrique Gil, and Martin del Rosario, the film is directed by Topel Lee, and grossed P25.20M in 2 weeks of showing. The 3 films were distributed by Star Cinema.
Good at No. 3 is The Filipino Channel's first produced film A Mother's Story starring Pokwang and directed by John D. Lazatin. The family drama film grossed P24.81M in 2 weeks of showing, and distributed by Star Cinema.
2012's few Cinemalaya finalist were given the chance to be recognized by the public. Star Cinema distributed the Cinemalaya Audience Choice Awardee, Bwakaw, and Coco Martin's co-produced film Sta. Niña while OctoArts Films distributed Judy Ann Santos, Agot Isidro, Janice de Belen, and Iza Calzado's Mga Mumunting Lihim film.
Internationally acclaimed film by Brillante Mendoza entitled Captive was also distrubuted by Star Cinema in selected cinemas only.
